Top Contributing Factors
Collisions involving an animal remained the top contributing factor in both years, with the count increasing by 18.8% from 96 in 2020 to 114 in 2021. Crashes where a driver 'Ran off road - left' doubled in count from 10 to 20 incidents, moving from the third-ranked factor to the second. Incidents involving 'Failure to yield right of way from a stop sign' also more than doubled, rising from 9 to 19, to become the third most frequent cause in 2021.

Vehicles & Demographics
The makes of vehicles involved in crashes saw some shifts, with Ford and Chevrolet remaining the most common. The number of Fords involved rose from 51 to 74, and Chevrolets increased from 72 to 91 between 2020 and 2021. All crash data in this report is sourced from Iowa Crash Data, accessed programmatically via the ArcGIS Open Data API (SODA). This dataset contains official police-reported motor vehicle traffic crash records maintained by the reporting jurisdiction's law enforcement agency. Records are published to the open data portal by the municipality and are subject to the portal's terms of use.
