Driver impairment was noted in 1,842 crashes, representing 3.4% of all collisions. Among these, alcohol was the primary substance in 1,662 cases. Drug impairment was cited in 123 crashes, and a combination of alcohol and drugs was recorded in 57 incidents.

Crashes by City

The highest concentration of crashes within municipal boundaries occurred in Iowa's largest cities. Des Moines led with 5,522 crashes, followed by Davenport with 3,057 incidents. Cedar Rapids (2,075 crashes) and Sioux City (2,031 crashes) also reported high volumes of collisions. Among crashes where a driver condition other than 'apparently normal' was recorded, driving under the influence of alcohol was the most frequent, cited for 2,049 drivers. Driver fatigue or falling asleep was noted for 763 drivers, a condition often associated with long-distance travel. The most common action for non-motorists involved in a crash was 'Entering or crossing roadway,' which was recorded in 554 instances. A much smaller number of incidents involved non-motorists moving along the roadway, either with traffic (94 cases) or against it (21 cases). Person Type

Of the 115,185 individuals involved in crashes, the overwhelming majority (95.3%) were drivers, totaling 109,774 people. Passengers accounted for 4,513 individuals. The data also includes 460 pedestrians and 383 bicyclists involved in collisions.

Person Injury Severity

Across all persons involved in crashes, 321 individuals sustained fatal injuries. An additional 19,109 people were injured, with severities ranging from serious (1,471), to minor (6,307), to possible (11,331). A total of 1,339 persons involved were documented as having no injuries.

All crash data in this report is sourced from Iowa Crash Data, accessed programmatically via the ArcGIS Open Data API (SODA). This dataset contains official police-reported motor vehicle traffic crash records maintained by the reporting jurisdiction's law enforcement agency. Records are published to the open data portal by the municipality and are subject to the portal's terms of use.

  • Demographics: Age and sex distributions are drawn from person-level records linked to each crash event. A single crash may involve multiple persons.
  • Vehicle data: Make information is drawn from vehicle unit records linked to each crash event.
  • AI commentary: Narrative sections are generated by Google Gemini (large language model) based on the structured data. Commentary is descriptive, not predictive, and should not be interpreted as expert opinion.

  • Only crashes reported to and documented by law enforcement are included. Minor incidents, unreported crashes, and near-misses are not captured in this dataset.
  • Data reflects conditions at the time of the initial police report and may be subject to subsequent corrections, reclassifications, or supplements by the reporting agency.
  • Open data portal records may experience a publication lag - recently occurring crashes may not yet appear in the dataset at the time of report generation.
  • AI-generated commentary is produced by a large language model and is intended to highlight patterns in the data. It does not constitute legal, medical, or professional analysis.
