Top Contributing Factors
In December 2018, the top three contributing factors were collisions with an animal (797 crashes), followed too close (493), and driving too fast for conditions (404). Compared to December 2017, crashes involving an animal remained the top factor, with the count increasing by 2.7% from 776. The most significant change was a 40.1% decrease in the count of crashes for 'driving too fast for conditions,' which fell from 675 to 404, dropping it from the second to the third-ranked cause.

The top vehicle makes involved in crashes, including Ford, Chevrolet, and Dodge, remained consistent between December 2017 and December 2018, with counts for each decreasing in line with the overall trend. All crash data in this report is sourced from Iowa Crash Data, accessed programmatically via the ArcGIS Open Data API (SODA). This dataset contains official police-reported motor vehicle traffic crash records maintained by the reporting jurisdiction's law enforcement agency. Records are published to the open data portal by the municipality and are subject to the portal's terms of use.

- Open data portal records may experience a publication lag - recently occurring crashes may not yet appear in the dataset at the time of report generation.
