When Crashes Happen
The temporal patterns of crashes showed a shift between November 2022 and November 2023. While the peak hour for collisions remained the 5 PM evening commute in both periods (633 crashes in 2022, 654 in 2023), the peak day of the week changed from Tuesday (1,115 crashes) in 2022 to Wednesday (918 crashes) in 2023. The distribution of crashes across the week was more spread out in the current period compared to the prior period, which had a significant concentration of crashes on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Crash Severity Breakdown

Top Contributing Factors
Collisions involving animals remained the top contributing factor in both periods, with counts increasing from 1,587 to 1,622. "Followed too close" also held its rank as the second most common factor, with its count rising from 439 to 461. A notable shift occurred with "Driving too fast for conditions," which saw its count decrease from 369 in November 2022 to 221 in November 2023, causing it to fall from the 3rd to the 6th most cited factor. Conversely, "Failure to yield right-of-way from a stop sign" increased in count from 227 to 257, moving into the top five factors for the current period.

Road & Environmental Conditions
Environmental conditions appeared more favorable in November 2023 compared to the prior year. The proportion of crashes occurring on dry road surfaces increased from 54.0% (3,035 crashes) to 63.7% (3,526 crashes). Correspondingly, crashes on adverse surfaces like wet, snow, and ice/frost all decreased in count. Collisions during snowy weather dropped from 455 to 269 year-over-year. The distribution of crashes by lighting condition remained relatively stable, with a slight decrease in the proportion of daylight crashes from 44.1% to 41.5%.

Vehicles & Demographics
The makes of vehicles involved in crashes remained largely consistent year-over-year, with Ford, Chevrolet, and Toyota representing the top three most common makes in both November 2022 and November 2023. The total number of vehicles involved in collisions saw a slight decrease from 8,868 to 8,794. The age distribution of persons involved in crashes also showed stability, with no significant shifts in representation among the different age groups between the two periods.

All crash data in this report is sourced from Iowa Crash Data, accessed programmatically via the ArcGIS Open Data API (SODA). This dataset contains official police-reported motor vehicle traffic crash records maintained by the reporting jurisdiction's law enforcement agency. Records are published to the open data portal by the municipality and are subject to the portal's terms of use.

- Vehicle data: Make information is drawn from vehicle unit records linked to each crash event.
- AI commentary: Narrative sections are generated by Google Gemini (large language model) based on the structured data. Commentary is descriptive, not predictive, and should not be interpreted as expert opinion.

- Only crashes reported to and documented by law enforcement are included. Minor incidents, unreported crashes, and near-misses are not captured in this dataset.
