When Crashes Happen

Crash frequency peaked midweek, with Wednesday recording the highest number of incidents at 804. The afternoon commute was the most hazardous time of day, with the 3 p.m. hour seeing a peak of 391 crashes. While the majority of collisions occurred during daylight hours (3,096), a significant number also happened in darkness (806).

First Harmful Event

Crashes were more likely to occur on non-intersection road segments, which accounted for 2,048 incidents. Four-way intersections were the most common type of junction for crashes, with 1,113 incidents occurring at these locations. Where controls were present, traffic signals were the most common, associated with 1,740 vehicles in crashes. Most Damaged Area

The front of the vehicle was the most common area of impact, recorded as the most damaged area for 2,150 vehicles. This aligns with the high number of rear-end collisions, as the rear was the second most common damage area, noted on 1,163 vehicles. Damage to the driver-side and passenger-side corners was also frequent, indicating a significant number of angle collisions.

Driver impairment was suspected or confirmed in 145 crashes, representing 3.3% of all incidents. Alcohol was the most cited impairment, involved in 131 of these crashes. Drugs were a factor in 10 crashes, and a combination of alcohol and drugs was noted in 4 crashes.

Paved vs Unpaved Road

Crash distribution across Iowa DOT's maintenance districts was uneven, reflecting population and traffic density. District 1, which includes the Des Moines metro area, recorded the highest number of crashes with 1,308. The data shows a near-even split for the most common crash types. Non-collision, single-vehicle incidents (such as rollovers or running off the road) accounted for 1,269 crashes (28.8%).   • AI commentary: Narrative sections are generated by Google Gemini (large language model) based on the structured data. Commentary is descriptive, not predictive, and should not be interpreted as expert opinion.

  • Only crashes reported to and documented by law enforcement are included. Minor incidents, unreported crashes, and near-misses are not captured in this dataset.
  • Data reflects conditions at the time of the initial police report and may be subject to subsequent corrections, reclassifications, or supplements by the reporting agency.
  • Open data portal records may experience a publication lag - recently occurring crashes may not yet appear in the dataset at the time of report generation.
